High machine leasing giant to deal with the EU tariffs on Chinese imports and the way through and fork installed capacity market cut

As one of the largest specialist leasing companies in Europe, and one of the largest in the world, Mateco is trying to use its scale to weather uncertainty caused by new EU tariffs on Chinese-made MEWP (mobile lifting work Platform) and economic difficulties in the European construction market.

The Luxembourg-based company has 45,000 units in 15 countries, including 3,000 forklifts, 3,500 telescopic fork loaders and about 39,000 aerial work platforms, 1,500 of which are vehicle-mounted. With about a third of the company's mobile lifting work platforms produced by Chinese manufacturers, the family-owned company is already feeling the impact of the European Commission's decision last year to impose tariffs of about 20 to 50 percent on Chinese-made MEWPs.

Western manufacturers must learn to produce more efficiently, lower prices and introduce new designs, especially for all-electric devices. But Chinese brands are also under pressure. They were producing too many machines - the market couldn't digest the volume. You can't run a long-term business by dumping, but I think they understand that as well. They still have a lot to learn in terms of service support and are a long way from reaching an acceptable level.

This is particularly evident in the telescopic arm forklift market. Telescopic boom forklifts are very much an end user product - about 50% end user and 50% rental. Established manufacturers in Europe have up to 50 years of experience in building dealer networks. If you look at the telescopic arm forklift, it needs more parts and more service support, so it will be more difficult for Chinese brands to enter this market. The service of aerial work platform products is of course equally important.
